TOKYO -- China is expanding its military facilities near a group of islets in the East China Sea involved in a territorial dispute with many of the Asian giant's neighboring countries, a Japanese news report said Monday.
Construction of a military base is under way in the Nanji Islands in Zhejiang Province, about 300 kilometers northwest of the Japanese-administered Senkaku Islands, which are also claimed by China, the Kyodo News agency reported, citing “several Chinese sources.”
The Senkakus are also claimed by Taiwan, where they are known as the Tiaoyutais.
The base is expected to boost China's readiness to respond to potential military crises in the region as well as beef up surveillance over an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) it declared over part of the East China Sea in November 2013, the sources told Kyodo.
Aircraft flying into another county's ADIZ are required to identify themselves and provide other flight data.
Beijing has already built several large radar installations on the main Nanji Island and paved landing strips on an island nearby, the report said.
