Sony Mobile is lowering its smartphone shipment target for 2014 and is now seeking cheaper panel and touch panel solutions in order to reduce costs and increase profitability.
Smartphone competition has intensified in the market vendors have begin to expect lower-priced solutions with high-end specifications from their supply chains.
Sony previously downward adjusted its global smartphone shipment forecast for fiscal year 2014 (April 2014-March 2015) from 50 million units to 43 million units and is now further lowering the target to 40 million units, according to Japan-based Nikkei News.
The decline means fewer orders for supply chains, which, coupled with new demand from Sony, is putting pressure on supply chains to lower prices in order to maintain a strong foothold in Sony's smartphone orders.
China-based panel and touch panel makers can expect to see increased orders from Sony as many are now using low-priced solutions. Truly Optoelectronics is reportedly increasing OGS supply to Sony.
