Some touchscreen controller and logic IC vendors are expected to step into the LCD driver IC market in 2014 eyeing the growing smartphone market in China, according to industry sources.
Touchscreen controller IC vendor FocalTech Systems moved into the driver IC segment in 2013, aiming at strengthening its penetration in China's handset industry, indicated the sources.
Following the steps of FocalTech, a number of China-based IC design houses, including Sino Wealth Electronic, Galaxycore, Rockchip Electronics and New Vision Microelectronics, have also ventured into the development of handset-use driver ICs, the sources revealed.
These China-based IC suppliers are focusing on production of logic ICs currently, and are extending their production lines to include LCD driver ICs, leveraging support from the China government and the rising flat panel industry in China, commented the sources.
Galaxycore is currently the largest CMOS image sensor supplier in China accounting for a 60-70% market share, while Rockchip has been a leading vendor for tablet solutions.
